CSP 101 – Survival Mandarin

(3 MOCredits – 30 Hours, 15 sessions of 2 hours)

Mandarin (Putonghua) is the most commonly spoken language in China and most spoken language in the world with over 1.1 billion speakers. This course provides the opportunity to learn survival Mandarin with practical and interesting lectures, focusing on phonetics, such as the four basic tones and rules of pinyin. Learn to convey simple ideas, communicate using basic vocabulary, and recognise simple Chinese characters.

(2 MO Credits – 20 Hours, 5 sessions of 4 hours)

Learn how to produce short documentary films using readily available state-of-the-art facilities, hardware and software to use as instruments to convey ideas that will act as impactful catalysts in the culture of social responsibility.

To what extent can our individual actions have an impact on the environment? How do our consumption habits, choice of products or even social and political decisions influence global environmental issues? To appreciate the culture and way of thinking of the Chinese, embedded deeply in the country’s history and philosophy, the module features 4 story episodes: “Chinese Medicine and Food”, looking at the Chinese understanding of health; “Calligraphy and Kong-Fu”, combining Taoist and Buddhist philosophies; “Emperors and the Forbidden City”, providing snapshots of China’s socio-historical power relations and the last using Macao as a case-study for Canton culture and the opening up of China.

Learn how to approach creativity as a process to accomplish innovation in products and services. Embark in a thorough journey beginning with fostering inspiring ideas to actually implementing and testing them by modelling prototypes using 3D printing and laser cutting technologies at the USJ Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab).
